John and his family lived in a log cabin that he and his brothers built in 1822, located on Chestnut Creek, near Blair's Forge, in what is now Carroll Co., VA. He was mainly a farmer but also a shoe cobbler, miller, blacksmith, and Primitive Baptist Preacher. John ran a grist mill, located about a mile from his cabin, and no one had breakfast until he got it going and returned. He was a strict taskmaster to his children and kept precise records of his purchases and sales. It was said that John was very fair in his business dealings, offering credit to those who couldn't pay right away. On the other hand, if someone was behind in paying him, they got no more credit. This applied not only to neighbors and friends but also to his sons and sons-in-law.
