Ferrell was orphaned at age 5. His father died in Dec 1918 and his mother in Feb 1920. He and his younger brother were taken in by his elderly paternal grandfather, Riley Emerson Gallimore, and step-grandmother, Elverda Gutshall Gallimore, and raised on the old John Stone farm on Chestnut Creek, Carroll Co., VA. Ferrell lived and worked on the farm until age 18 when his grandfather died.
